Mossy area

Good afternoon all on this wet day in Manchester . I am helping my sister-in- law with her garden. The front is south facing, however lots of trees, monkey puzzle, oak and fir trees. Poor drainage, so this morning I attempted to reliev compacted earth by digging the soil, turning it, applied soil improver and compost. The boarders are covered in moss, which I know is great for wildlife , but I removed it and dug it into the boarders. The plants in the boarders vary from lavender, box, sedum. Any help appreciated as to how to improve the soil and drainage. Thank you in advance.

Grit Maureen, and plenty of it. Depending on how big the area is you can buy it by the ton or bagged from garden centres. If it's very heavy clay a couple of buckets per sq metre plus plenty of strawy manure will end up breaking it down.

I wouldn't dig, I'd mulch with something. Bark, compost, shreddings.

  • Thanks both, but I've dug it now!!

The ground is so hard and compacted, I couldn't penetrate the surface with a finger.

Hopefully I haven't caused too much damage, I did apply loads of compost.

I'm going to try to find a farm/ stables nearby for horse manure.
