Water Butts

Talking of water butts.  Should the water butt be cleaned from time to time or will the water be ok once it's in the ground?

    Gets a rinse when the butt is near empty but I never clean it.

    The water in my butts is over a year old as I didn't use it last year; too much rain.  It is completely clear as I keep the butts covered at all times.

    Thanks everyone for your advice.  I'm not sure about the Jeyes Fluid, Alan4711 as I'm trying to be organic.
