Poor Lawn

I know there are hundreds of threads on lawns and their various problems but I'm stumped with mine. At the minute my grass is turning yeloow in lots of places, more yellow in total now than green. Over the past few years the lawn has been given every treatment possible, such as scarified every year, spiked, given treatments 4x annually by greenthumb etc etc. But the lawn is constantly covered in moss and every year at this time goes yellow in large patches. All the gardens around me seem ok and gree, and they never get the attention my does, so whats going wrong?  I'm inclined to believe that maybe its the soil thats the problem.  My house is the first biult in a development about 25 years ago. Maybe the topsoil was "imported" from elsewhere and is of poor quality???  Any help appreciated

  • Thanks Verdun.  You could be right.  To be honest I've never seen any grub like things in the garden and dont really have an issue with birds pecking. But I'll try your remedy next year, see if it helps

  • Hi Tetley.  Before this house was built about 25 years ago it was just a green field site. The garden is "L" shaped and faces south and west, so gets full sun. Plants seem to be fine, just the grass. Sorry, tried to upload some photos but kept getting an error message

  • No dog Tetley. The occasional cat strolls through but luckily dont leave too much mess. To be fair I dont water the grass much as we normally get plenty of rain image

Greenthumb come 4 times per year and feed the lawn. They were due last week as a matter of fact for the Late Autumn treatment but never showed. Grass always looks fine over the summer months and I dont really cut it too low, maybe inch and a half??

Also scarify it every year in spring and last year had it spiked to aerate. As I said, it gets a lot of TLC whilst others around me hardly bother, yet at this time of year mine looks awful while theirs all look fine still. Mine went the same as this last year but recovered ok in the spring. This year looks worse though. By spring its looks like it will all be dead at this rate

  • That looks much shorter than my lawn at this time of year.

Do Green Thumb have an explanation for the condition of your lawn?  It's not a very good advertisement for them

  • Well, they never turned up this time as scheduled. If they do turn up now sometime soon I wont let them put anything on it until I know whats going on.  To be honest the young lad who comes here from Greenthumb doesnt seem to know much about anything.  He just comes and spreads his stuff and goes again normally
