Mystery seed

Hello, I got a seed to plant with a dress I bought and this is what it has produced. Does anyone have any idea what this is and how to look after it properly? So far it's been kept indoors only.

Thank you

  • Thanks for the welcome!

Should I put it outside then? I was worried it wouldn't like the cold!
  • I don't have a greenhouse unfortunately image

It started off as a white seed with a smiley face printed on the side, and then when it first grew there was a smiley face on one of the leaves (I swear I'm not making this up!)

Those leaves then fell off and it shot up quite quickly. I potted it around late July/August and it was quite small until it got a cane to wrap itself around. The number of leaves hasn't increased much recently.

For every item of clothing you get from this company you get a seed on the tag, I bought it from a small local shop.
  • This is what it looked like when I got it!

Well, it does say it in full letters on the bag : "magic bean" / "haricot magique". It's a runner bean. What more do you want to know?

I saw these on the telly last week. Runner beans. Unfortunately its the wrong time of year.

Yes, those little seeds with smiley faces on them. I've heard about them.

pansyface ... err ... those dolly mixture sweets ... you need to talk to Frank

  • I got a bean for one of my children which had "Happy Birthday" on the bean. Something like this maybe?

  • Singer Gardener, that first picture on the link you posted is exactly what mine looked like when it started to grow.

Thanks for all the help and advice, I will try and keep it alive during winter (may have to convince the hubby to get me a greenhouse!) and see how it grows when it gets warmer.
  • Just to add that I don't have any connection with the above website - I don't think that's even where I bought the beans I gave to my kids. I just googled "Happy Birthday Beans" and it was the first hit!
