Which Actea simplex?

Does anyone grow Actea simplex Hillside Black Beauty or James Compton? I was going to go for Black Beauty but the website 'plants for shade' describes James Compton as the best of the lot and the most fragrant. Google images seems to show it's foliage as pretty dark and the flowers as very upright, is that really the case?

Most of the dark foliaged Acteas are quite similar and the flowers are long upright candles. I don't think there's much to choose between them personally. The height can vary between different varieties but that's about it, although your own growing conditions will cause varaition too. I have Brunette, and basic Atropurpurea, but they're hard to tell apart, if I'm honest image

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
  • Thanks Fairy and Verdun, I'm more excited than ever about getting one now image

  • Would aged manure mixed in the planting hole be a good start Verdun? I use tomato feed late spring and summer for anything that flowers.
