  • the more movement the top gets the more roots the root ball will send out to stabilised itself, if you stake it too much then it just sits there and doesn't produce much roots, then when the stake rots after five years or so the tree just falls over at the first strong breeze.

    that's why when I plant large trees I prefer to secure the root ball with staking rather than have something above ground, plus it looks better.

    Aha! Then mine should be fine, because the stakes do move very slightly, so hopefully they are sturdy enough to stabilise the roots but not too sturdy to make the tree think it doesn't have to produce good roots.
