Filling the gap

My Pittisporum seems to have given up the ghost in a major way. After treatment for rampant ivy growing through from next door, the large 20 year old busup has developed large gaps and is one I to its heart. Should I take the whole bush out and star anew, or seek to insert over shrubs to cover the gap. If the latter, what would be recommended to grow we.l and provide much needed colour.
