Every year I cross Dahlias on my allotment, choosing the two most colourful ones just to see what happens, and have had some excellent results. Not all Dahlias need pinching out, although having said that I would pinch out all Dahlias grown from seed in their first year then see how they grow.

I'm really excited I've sown a tray of Dahlia seed for the first time and they are all growing ! No idea what colour or shape they lady on freecycle just marked the envelope "dahlia"

    I have two questions

    1. Will they flower this year ? I planted the seed 1st of April and I'm about to prick them out, they're about 1 1/2 inch tall.

    2. How long wil they take to grow to the size of tubers you buy in the garden centre?

I'll try and post a photo later

They're pretty quick and will flower this year. Don't know about the tubers, I just grew them for the year and didn't like themimage

I grew dahlias from seed for the first time last year. Large plants (some over 3ft tall), with lots of flower heads. image

When I dug them up late autumn I was surprised at the size of the tubers, never imagined they could get so big in just one season. Unfortunately all the stored ones went soft but the ones I missed  image and overwintered in a pot are sprouting new growth.

Growing from seed again this year, different variety though.

That is encouraging image  Just need the rain to stop so I can crack on because I have not got room to turn around in the greenhouse !

Good day all  Today going home after with my sister and Dissabled brother a few days arround  maidstone kent  When I get there I expect the runner beans to have reached to the tops of their 8 ft canes  A question  ? What are the views of the pinching out the growing tips of all climbing beans  is it good to do so  if so at what height?? You see as I've said before  at 83 your never to old to learn  When I left home last Friday they were about 3/4 ft high growing after some persuading  to do so after strong winds with as was discribed earlier the canes pointing outwards my offer still stands if anyone wants to see how its done just let me know   Thats it breakfast time now then it's home time and don't spare the horses
