They don't look rotten. One is budding up quite nicely. Might just be a combination of issues that led to them stinking. They are quite solid if you squeeze them. Much like trying to squeeze a carrot
If they were down in the pot, as against lying on the surface, I'm tending towards agreeing with swiss sue, jerusalem artichokes, also called sunchokes. You would have to grow them for a season and see what the shoots, leaves and flowers look like to be sure.
Googled sunchokes. Hmm. They are similar in terms of colour and "knobby" bits in various places on the root/bulb. The only difference I would say is that mine are consistently straighter than what I've seen in google images but, if they aren't sunchokes, then they're certainly very similar

When I was pulling up my cucamelons they'd developed rhizomes so maybe something like that?
Hi Liz, I look in most days but only post if I think I might know something useful.
Plant them up, Stephen, and give yourself a surprise!
I planted them back in the pot yesterday
I have to say something I've noticed ... they stink! I wasn't sure if it's the water or pot, but I think now it's actually them! Fowl smell.
@fidget - They were deep within the pot. The pot itself wasn't much more than maybe 1.5 hands depth, and they were almost near the bottom.
No one can remember what they looked like before, so it'll indeed be a mystery
Are they rotten, then? Could be why they stink.
apart from the shoot they look like something that smells bad
Have you squeezed them? If they're rotten they'll be soft. Or will become soft
In the sticks near Peterborough
