Soggy lawn on a slope

Hi, our garden is on a slope and we have always had issue with it being soggy. Recently installed decking at top, then the lawn was halfed, we have also just built a conservatory. Lawn still very soggy, I have two questions.... 1. Is best way to combat the wet lawn digging trenches at angle to meet a perforated pipe central on the lawn to run down under my patio and into a rain? 2. If I do this, can I lay sand on top of my grass and totally re-turf?

Mick it's the usual solution for drainage so yes, although you have to get the layering right. The drainage pipe sits on a bed of gravel, then it's covered with more gravel, no sand as it will end up blocking the pipe. It's not a hard job, but it's best to get a professional in to do it as long term you'll save yourself money if it's done properly in the first place.

  • make sure that the water has somewhere suitable to drain into and not into the rear or your house, a gravel filled soak away is ok ( A minimum of 1m x 1m x 1m - the bigger the better, mine is under my green house and is 3m x 2m by 3m deep - and as a bonus I got rid of a huge amount of rubble and other rubbish that had been left by the former owners!)  but access to proper drains is better!
