What type of currant/fruit bush are these?

I've got 5/6 of these bushes in my fruit bed on my new Allotmemt and I don't really know what they are. I've been told they are currants of some sort. Any ideas? Thanks!

Yes currants, although you'll have to wait as to colour they'll be.

Currants should have little plump buds on them. Perhaps they are gooseberries, usually with lots of thorns,

It's very hard to tell with bare stems, but I'm pretty sure the one in the second picture is a red currant.

White or red, but not, I think, black.

They are probably currant bushes, you'll need to wait till they fruit to know the colour although black may flower later than red or white as these produce a later crop.

    Gooseberry have thorns on them.

If you are lucky you may have a hybrid bush. I have one which looks like any other when it has dropped it's leaves but if you ask what it is I wouldn't be able to tell without going to the plot and checking the label, only planted it this year and haven't had any fruit yet.

Charlotte 2311 they look like red or white currants, their not gooseberries. Red and white currants have the buds clumped together black current has single buds on the stemsimage
  • Thanks all. I didn't think they were gooseberries as I have a gooseberry bush aswell which looks very different so I know the difference. I just wasn't sure if you could tell which sort of currants the bushes were before they fruited image I guess I'll wait until next year to find out for sure!! I think I may have both?!

As soon as they leaf out you will be able to tell if they are Black Currants as their foliage has a strong black curranty smell. Red/White currant foliage just has a leafy smell.
