Hebes

I have been trying to find a cure for my hebe plants, they are the large green leaved variety (Neil's Choice ?). The leaves first develop some spots, brown patches and start to turn yellow.  Then they turn completely yellow and either drop off, or shrivel up and go brown.   I have been led to believe it is a fungal disease, so I used Roseclear twice in the spring but no change, or improvement.  I then tried Fungus Clear Ultra twice to no effect.  I asked advice on BBC Radio Kent Gardening Show and was advised to use Copper Mixture.  This has been applied three times since early September, although there are not as many leaves turning yellow, there are still too many for my liking .  Anyone got any idea's?

  • Verdun.  They are in soil which is mainly Sandy with good drainage.  Not overly exposed to wind. In fact everything should be ideal for hebe plants which is the main reason I planted them in that location.  There are about twenty plants in a row forming a low hedge.

Hi Andrew last year I had a Hebe Saphire with a fungal problem I believe Septoria! I sprayed with a mix of BAyer Systhane Fungas Fighter and Epsom salt mix at recommended dosages no problem this year in fact still flowering now in the north east and lots of growth also planted in. Semi shade

  • As the hebe plants form a hedge I would not dig up any to look at the roots.  The majority of the leaves still look green and healthy.  I currently remove about a dozen affected leaves daily over twenty plants, this is less than it has been.  Perhaps the copper mixture is working albeit slowly?

  • Thank you all for your advice.  I will keep fingers crossed and hope for the best.  Cheers
