raspberry planting spacing why so big?

ive got a couple of rows of raspberries(newly planted) about 5 foot between rows as the experts/websites recommend.
Any idea why there needs to be such a big gap?
Aware of suckers but I will take these out anyway.
Conscious it leaves a lot of dead space that I could be using for something else.
Any help gratefully received

Quite simply, yoweey, to allow sufficient room between rows to pick the fruit. even well trained canes will have a spread of 2ft.
And the suckers will be your plants for the following years - if you take them all out you'll have little fruit in the future

Perhaps I should have said, 2ft either side.
