Feeding an old apple tree

We have an old bramley apple tree in the garden. In the 3 years we have lived here we have had one heavy crop, then a poor crop and this year a heavy crop again. Should we feed the tree in any way and if so what with?

  • Sue, this is known as 'biennial bearing' and is common with bramleys.  Feeding and some corrective pruning may bring it back to annual bearing but no guarantee.  See the RHS advice, here:

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
  • Thank you very much for you help.

I agree with Bob; Bramleys are biennial, heavy crop one year, light or very light the next.

Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
