what needs supporting with canes and garden string? specifically gladioli...

are there certain species that always need support, or does it vary?
Our gladioli are going strong and I'm very excited (new gardener... easily excited!) but they're so tall they're starting to flop, and I don't want the flowering stems to snap. They're going to be tricky to tie up though as they're flat blades, rather than round stems.

Single cane, figure of 8 around stem and the cane, tie at cane end. Job done.

What climbers to what support Pam? Hessian string is fine for annual use but doesn't have a long life

Hessian is kinder but probably wouldn't support the weight of a rose or clematis as the plants get heavier and the string starts rotting. But it would support clematis til it clings on itself. Roses won't do that.

I use garden sandwich ties, if you catch my drift
They are green, so 'disappear' into the plant. And they are reusable 
If it's for a more permanent tie and you don't want it to rot or rub Wilko sell a reel of wire covered in rubber which you can just cut with secateurs and form into a figure 8. It's really good and much cheaper than the equivalent product sold elsewhere. I use it to support a wisteria and also small trees or shrubs.
