What month is best for *BUD GRAFTING*

image

Hello everybody,

My husband has a couple of apple trees he has grown from pips. They are well established , and he is thinking of grafting from one to the other. Have looked on internet and most say early spring or summer depending on the variety. But WHEN EXACTLY? Month?

                                    THANKS IN ADVANCE

  • Hi Julie, I'm not exactly a confident gardener, but as the spring months are March, A pril and May, I would imagine "early spring" would be March.

If I were you, I would try in early March and if after six weeks the grafts have not taken, have another try in early summer.  There isn't much you can lose and, who knows, you might even succeed both times!

    Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

    Good luck!

  • thanks for your replies guys xx

one of the trees has blossom but the other doesn't. Think he wants to graft from the one that flowers and gets fruit to the one that doesn't xx

P.S we have a colony of honey bees in a redundant bird box.. so no excuses for pollination,

This will be their 3rd year here x

  • Probably the whip-and-tongue method of grafting would be most suitable for your needs, this is best carried out in late winter or early spring. If you're looking for a specific month......let's say February.
