Carot Flies

Just about to sow my first ever carots and my allotmenteers are already tut tuting about Carot Flies

If I sow and place a clear plastic sheeting fence around the patch how high do I need to make it so the little blighters cant get over it

? Or is it a waste of time

Someone suggested walking on the soil between the rows to stop the flies

? Any other proper advice please

The usual advice is that they can't fly above 18" (45cm.)

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.

Also, she doesnt fly in the evening, so thin out as late as possible in the evenings, and plant something smelly with them such as chives, it takes the carrot smell away.

Agree with the fleece. Also later sowings will miss carrot fly season so stagger your planting.
