Osmanthus is another good shrub for shade, AnniD. There are a few types - small fragrant white flowers for late winter/early spring. I have burkwoodii, and it's very straightforward. The white Potentillas will tolerate lots of shade too, and so will the early white Spirea arguta Bridal Wreath. Viburnums are ideal,  and Rhododendron, Pieris and Camellias if you have suitable soil. White or pale planting is always great in shady areas.

Coloured foliage is also good in shade - Euonymous are great for tricky areas.

It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

I have a lime green leaved philadelphus which brightens up the shade. It has fewer flowers than the darker leaved one (in my case)

I have 3 very young Philadelphus Belle Etoile in these beds and they seem to be very healthy and strong. Here are a few photos I took today; plenty of geraniums, ladys mantle, campanula, nepeta and Rose Isaacc Pereiere (sp?) and R. Boule de Neige which were planted winter 2016. Infact pretty much everything was planted last autumn/ winter and the north aspect hasnt stopped it in my opinionimageimageimageimage
