I line mine with " weed fabric" it lets just enough moisture through to keep the timber from drying and shrinking ( which happened with the prototype) I find the soil holds it in place and I've never had any problem with ordinary staples rusting.
a1154 was thinking about using the containers for a cutting garden to site near his kitchen door - what about herbs? You could have a bay tree in one, a prostrate rosemary trailing over the edge of the other, and some sage, thyme, oregano and other herbs - done with thought it could look really good

Im thinking i dont need to use them all for the same thing, so a cutting garden in one (think it takes 2 years but would love sweet william)
maybe herbs in another, maybe a small tree in the 3rd. If it doesnt work out with the cutting garden or herbs, can easily rplant with something else.
