Can You Suggest a Front Garden Tree or Bush

My son has moved into a house with a large bay window which everyone seems to enjoy looking into. He is trying to find a bush or a tree to plant in the middle of this small lawn with following attributes:
- Evergreen
- Wide at the bottom (little trunk)
- Hardy
- Grows to about 2 0r 3 meters
- Suit North facing facing and open aspect
We were looking at the Cryptomeria Elegans (Japanese Cedar) until told it was subject to heavy frosts in Winter.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

the trouble is, you won't find a plant which quickly gets to 2 - 3m then stops.
Maybe a laurel, or holly which can be clipped?
Escallonia would be useful too or net curtains?
Thank you Hostafan - will add to list but not the net curtains - he hates them with a passion!
ditto, mercifully we have total privacy here.
What about a trellis with honeysuckle or something ?
Holly would be my thought too. Or Mahonia.
Or a great big hedge
With you on the net curtains....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
What is it that people are enjoying watching? I think we should be told.
I can't help looking in windows that are uncurtained and rooms that are lit up for all to see! Some people even put ornaments on their window shelves making them look like a shop window. Perhaps anything on that lawn area will distract from the window - stone urn planted up, sculpture, pond or gnomes (he he!). A hedge or tree will block out some light. Pampas grass?
Cotoneasters shown as hedge and he's already planted 3 photinea against the wall. The Ribes only grows to 1m. Just looked at pictures of Mahonia though and I think one of those might fit the bill. I have one in my garden and they grow quite quickly and you can prune them easily.
PS Don't think there's anything interesting to see through his window but he reckons its bored dog walkers tramping the streets. The man in the bamboo looks as though he's seen something interesting though!!!
Thanks again everyone
What about a viburnum placatum. You can keep to whatever size you want.
