Saying goodbye

Some of you will know that earlier this year we took the hard decision to have one of our ash trees felled - it had always looked slightly unhealthy, and this summer quite large branches began to die back.
We decided that if we were going to lose it, better to bite the bullet and have it felled now so that we could make the most of the new opportunities this would give us in that corner of the garden.
Today was the day ...
We're keeping the healthy tree on the right.
When the stump's been ground out next month, we'll move the compost bins, sort out that corner and make the most of our new planting opportunity

Wow.
Bet you're glad you got a man in! Looks like they knew what they were doing - protecting the lawn, even
What a lot of brash! It always looks more on the ground than it does up in the air. Did they put that through a shredder? And what lovely logs! Real shame to burn them all.
That's a great new planting area Dove
In the sticks near Peterborough
Yes, the brash went through a shredder - there were some long straight poles that he took away as his dad said he could find a use for them, and they'll use the logs on their woodburner. We don't have an open fire here.
I've kept one large log back to use as a table in the garden as it rots down for the bugs and beetles.

All of that corner has been so dry it's been impossible to grow anything - now we can plan ......... and although it's a bit wide open, the view isn't too bad - I've watched sparrowhawks doing a courtship flight above those pines in the distance

Cracking big logs Dove - they'd make good stools
Great opportunity for planting though - what fun
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Jolly uncomfartable in the process though Fg

nice sunny corner now though Dove and all that water the tree sucked out of the garden will remain to benefit everything else.
Wow Dove its really opened the garden up and when there is sun, has let more light in! Bet they were chilly up there!I'm sure you made coffee at 30 min intervals!
Can't say I'm gonna be sad to see the ash tree roots go, speaking as the womble that gets delegated to dig through that particular bit!
but its going to be lovely to have a project that you can do from scratch instead of inheriting an established area. The possibilities make your brain boggle! Have fun with the designing, I'm sure you will have plenty of suggestions from this lot! X
That will make a huge difference Hosta
