    I agree with you philippa. I don't think an excess (of planting) is more suitable somehow. Something simple which can be kept tidy without hours and hours of work, and allows people to see what's really important. Never has the phrase 'less is more' been more  appropriate I think. 

    It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

  • Heucheras are good for different leaf colour and shape, some are in flower at this time of year. Also some red hot pokers are too. Geranium Walgrave pink that I have in my garden is in flower. You could have polyanthus too.

    At Tyne Kot, each row of gravestones in seated in a narrow bed with low plants that probably look very good in spring and summer without being so tall or colourful they detract from the information carved on each stone - name, nationality, regiment and dates - assuming they have the information and that he ins't one of the inidentified fallen.
