Well you can certainly grow a plant from a pip, folk have been doing that for fun for generations but in my opinion I don't think you'd get it to set useable fruit even if it flowered.

I planted a grapefruit seed in 1968 at the tender age of 10.

I had the tree for many years and it grew to about 3-4ft. It flowered regularly in late winter/early spring (in the g/house) and often tiny grapefruit would appear, but they got no bigger than a marble.

The scent of the leaves and flowers is wonderful.

I think I abandoned it around the time I discovered beer image

  • Thank you everyone,I think I will play safe and buy a mature plant.

    Happy Gardening.

  • Growing fruit from seeds is fun but you cannot guaruntee what they will turn out like. Most fruit trees are clones grafted onto another plants roots. Plants from seed take years to reach the point where they will fruit.

The Wyevale garden centre near us had all of theirs at 50% off a couple of weeks a go. You could try yours.

I had to buy oneimage  It already had 8 good sized lemons on it and flower buds. Keep an eye out as they tend to sell off old stock to make room for new.

I once grew a lemon plant from seed when I lived in a mobile home. With all those picture windows they can get very hot inside and the lemon plant just loved it. After five years it was from floor to ceiling [with much pruning of the sides] and I had to cut its head off every year. No fruit though, but what a wonderfull smell when you brushed against it. Hardly ever fed it [it was in soil] just watered.
