Could someone help name this Shrub?

Hi there,

We have this shrub in one bed of a house we have moved into, and we have no clue what it is? It seems to have a lot of dry upright sticks from previous growth and was obviously at one point much more populous in the bed?

If anyone has any suggestions we would love to know!

Thanks!

Are you sure it's a shrub? looks more like the regrowth of a hardy perennial, maybe an aster? well eaten and aphided

I think the foliage looks like these, but messed pic up and you cannot enlarge it. Soz.
