Most of the trees in UK parks and gardens come from somewhere other than the UK

Spanish chestnut would have been my guess too.

Are the fallen leaves very hard , almost leathery?

I remember , a million years ago, at college telling a fellow student , who couldn't remember castanea sativa  to think Castanets saliva. It worked

Looks like sweet chestnut to me. Roll one under your boot to split it and see what the seeds look like.   By sweet gum I presume you mean a Eucalytus. Eucalytpus pods vary in size but look nothing like that.

In America I think Sweet Gum refers to Liquidambar styraciflua.

Another reason to use latin binomial names.

  • They look like sweet chestnut to me but you need to post a picture and size indicator of the leaves to be sure. Also you could check on a tree identified site.
  • I think they're sweet chestnut too - we had several trees in the grounds of the offices where I used to work - I never needed to buy chestnuts for Christmas - I miss them now image
