Amaryllis bulbs - advice please!

I would love to give my sister a potted-up amaryllis (hippeastrum) bulb for Christmas.  But to save postage (she lives the other end of the country), I would need to give it to her - wrapped - when I see her on 29th November, and it wouldn't be opened til 25th December.

Is that going to do it damage?  Will it rot / go mouldy / anything else nasty?

Would it be better if, rather than pot it up and wrap it, I gave her the bulb, pot and compost in separate packages for her to "assemble" on Christmas day?

Any advice gratefully received!

Rosie

If you keep it cold and dry, it will not start to grow. Wet and cold, it may rot. Wet and warm, it will grow. Up to you. I haven't started mine yet. Last years bulbs are in the greenhouse which is pretty cold, when they start growing seems to depend on variety. When the buds show I bring them into the house.

Thanks fidget - sounds like wrapping the bits separately might be the way to go (to keep the bulb away from the compost until planting).  I can tell my sister to keep the parcel somewhere cool-ish.
