Draining a pond

I've got a pond which is about 3m x 2m, which I'm thinking of partially draining to clean around the 'shelves' , while leaving the fish in the central deep section, which occupies about a third of the surface area. I have so many fish that I don't want to have to put them all in a holding tank. Of course, it could be that they will get too crowded in the water that remains, but I won't know that until I start draining. Any suggestions?

  • do you have a pond pump? if so attach some hose to it and run the pump, it should bail the pond out effectively and you get the nutrient rich water to put on your plants.

If no pump, is your pond higher than any point in your garden? if so, hose into the pond run it to the low point (or drain) and drain it that way.

if neither is possible, its a bucket and backache.

refill from water butts if you can

alternatively get a pond vacuum and do the shelves and bottom without emptying the pond much

If you're worried about the amount of fish in the pond, you could always move some into a holding tank - split them up. I wouldn't have thought it would be an issue though - they'll spend most of the winter down there together anyway image
