Onion/Garlic/Shallots

in Fruit & veg
Hi, I have my onions, garlic and, shallots underneath mesh cages (rabbits) and they could do with a weeding now.
Problem is, the green shoots have grown through the roof of the cages by about.8" If I remove the cages for weeding and then replace them it's impossible to get all the stems back through the cage without snapping them off. Will it do harm to the veg if the stems are bent under the cage or snapped?
The veg is well advanced

Not looking good to this question
Guess I will have to leave the cages off after weeding and hope the rabbits don't destroy them!
This is my dilema
