Hi greenfinger Steve. My compost was all grass cuttings. Nothing added. Got the idea from monty don. Turned it every 3 weeks. I've tried adding other stuff to it in the past but never was as good as this. I'll be doing exactly the same next year. I even got my neighbour to come into the garden to have s look at it now it's on the beds. She's not a gardener so didn't know what all the hype was about.
I still think it'd be better still with some cardboard or newspaper mixed in. Turning frequently - as soon as it starts to cool down - is the way to go too.
I added to my compost bin last night and came face to face with a brown rat. How can I keep them from foraging in the bin? I don't add anything I shouldn't eg cooked waste, meat or dairy. We have a council collected bin so I use that for kitchen waste and use the compost bin for some peelings, coffee grounds plus garden waste, leaves etc.
Keep the compost damp and regularly stirred. Give the sides a sharp bang with a stick or spade every time you go past (they don't like it) and don't put potato peelings in there - rats will move heaven and earth to get at potatoes (my brother's a potato farmer -he can tell some stories about what rats will do to get at them).
Do you have cats - are they hunters?

This probably needs a new thread...

Thanks for that link, Dove. Not sure how one would find that page otherwise.

Thanks Dovefromabove, didn't know about rats and potatoes. Yes, we have a cat and he is a prolific hunter, had a couple earlier this year.
Sounds like a good cat to have
