Something like a pittosporum

I love the silver variegated pittosporum with a passion, but they get so big!  I like the effect they make when they are newly planted and are still relatively small shrubs or bushes, as in a dark place they really shimmer.  Can anyone recommend something which has the same light, delicate, silvery effect but which stays small.  I would like to plant a pair of 'something' at the bottom of the garden on either side of an archway.  I have one pittosporum there at the moment which is stunning, and it needs a matching plant on the other side to balance it out, but I don't really want to  plant a second one as it seems so brutal to plant two shrubs which you know you will have to yank out in a couple of years.  Any ideas?

  • Euonymus fortunei 'Harlequin' ?

  • Thank you I should have said I do have several euonymus (euonymi?!) already, but you're right the colour is a good match.

  • Hi Verdun you may have two response from me as I did one from my phone which hasnt shown up online.  I wanted to say thank you - I didnt know about the pruning and that's such good news.  Having got home though I've looked up the Abelia 'Confetti' and it's a perfect substitute. I'm grateful for your comments

  • I bet - such hot colours with the silver must be great.

    @ adamdamant,

My favourite Pittosporum is Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Green Elf'. Lovely silvery small leaves and should not grow too tall.
