Rooting hormone powder

I have some old rooting hormone powder which has barely been used, had it about 10 years, is it still useable?  It is in perfect condition and been in it's original airtight container in the shed all this time.

I asked pretty much the same thing recently - the consensus was to ditch it: http://www.gardenersworld.com/forum/talkback/hormone-rooting-powder/827335.html

Personally, I never bother with the stuff.  I just pot my cuttings up and let nature take over.

I wouldn't bother using it if it's that age.

As Verd says, many things don't need it . I've never done a comparison to see if it's beneficial, but I do think it's like a lot of things - people use too much, assuming that will be better than only using a little. I never remember to buy it anyway!  image

  • Ah thanks for all your advice everyone.  I bought a small tub this morning before I read your comment Tetley - perhaps I wouldn't have bothered if I had read about your experiments, however the tub only cost me £1.49 so it won't break my bank.

Been gardening for 50 years, never used it and never had a problem getting cuttings to root. Waste of money

  • If I had the space I would experiment using hormone powder on half of my cuttings and leaving the rest without it.  The tub cost just £1.49 so not expensive and hopefully I will get some good results.
