  • The trouble with having the pond on the grass area is that the whole of it slopes in every direction and catches the sun but can understand the point about it been low.  May be I could have to small ones. Just want to say I only came on here on Sat and love it. You are all lovely xx

When I worked at Speke we had chickens - untill a buzzard had them!

If the run (say 3m x 1.5m x 1m) has a wooden frame and one end on wheels it can be moved around every day or three so the ground doesn't get too disgusting and all gets manured.  But that's not wildlife!

  • Hi Amber.  I am new on here as well.  I am a bird lover and enjoy many types of birds visiting my garden.  If your neighbours have cats please be careful regarding hiding places for cats anywhere near your new pond as they can be a death trap.  It is very upsetting when birds are caught.  If you would like Goldfinches to visit, put out sunflower hearts in feeders, it may take a while before they turn up.  If you would like to entice the delightful little Goldcrest some conifers would help.

  • plant fruit trees and have a wildflower meadow below. you can event plant bulbs in the are for wildflower to increase the season!

If you cut a circle of turf out around each tree so the grass doesn't touch the trunks as it make it easier to cut at the end of summer, and mulch in the spring native hedges around the edge would help too.

a small shallow water area would be good for wildlife to drink from and bath in, but obviously a pond would be better - do it at the low point of the area and water will drain into it. but always have a shallow edge so animal can get out if the fall in!

  • I'd agree with treehugger80 go for a fruit tree orchard. Most modern root stocks won't get more than 2-3m high, so no one can possible moan about them blocking light. Even larger trees like cherries on the commercially available root stocks will not get more than about 4M tall in 20 years time!

In a plot that size you could easily get few apples, a couple of plums, a cherry, couple of pears etc. Whatever floats your boat.
