Over-bearing jasmine

Haven't been in this garden for an autumn till now and now leaves have fled the rowan I can see that a jasmine is commandeering the top and since its leaves are still on it would seem to be potentially, at least, a huge sail.  The climber is 20 feet up and stems (or trunk) are tightly wound through the rowan.  We barely saw the jasmine flowering up in the canopy and the scent went right over our heads!

So,cut through the 1" to 2" jasmine stems/trunks and wait for it all to die back or get someone in to get up there and cut it out at the top?  It's very entwined with the rowan.

Thanks for all suggestions in advance.

  • Hi Tetley- Thanks for your thoughts.  The rowan is about 25 ft. I'd guess.  It's obscured by the jasmine so a bit hard to tell.  I can't touch the tree as it's protected but I have the go-ahead from our Trees Officer to do anything myself or hire someone to do what's desirable to the jasmine.  He recommended GW for opinions and advice.  Your thoughts are mine about the top dieing off though the jasmine rises from stems/trunks that are nearly 2" thick at the base and the whole woody structure is wound tightly round the rowan branches and trunk for a good 15ft.  It ain't going anywhere soon.  I think the real issue is the sheer mass and weight of green jasmine, which I guess would die and fall off. Thanks again for getting involved with my query.

  • Thank you for staying with me, on this.  Do you have to go through the lengthy procedure of applying for permission to halve the canopies annually or is it a once granted permission for each year thereafter?  It sounds very expensive either way.  Saying that it's my newly renovated conservatory that would cop the damage - aargh.  I'm so grateful for your experience, trees in the garden are wonderful but a new worry!  Do you think just cutting off the jasmine would be enough to reduce the risk to me and mine?  Again, many thanks for your continued interest and advices.

  • Can't thank you enough.  I'm going to cut off the jasmine at the knees and get someone in to look at the rowan canopy.  Cheers and happy gardening to you.

  • Wow, you do things by halves.  I had no idea that there was that much license around protected trees.  I thought even staring was punishable!  Cheers Tetley.

    Hi Bob,

Personally, because I love the idea of climbers growing through trees, and because the scent of Jasmine is so special, I would prune it to a level that you can more easily manage it rather than kill it off completely.  I notice that you have a bird feeder hanging from the tree, and I' sure the blackbirds love the berries of the Rowan, but also the addition of the climber adds the possibility of nesting habitat.  Not sure if this is what you would like?  But I would consider the possibility of pruning it to just a few feet above the feeder level, and do that poss every year depending on its growth taking out selective stems.

  • Thanks WOO3 I like the thinking but not sure that jasmine would grow out of thick 1 to 2 cms woody stems which is what the bottom 10 to 15 ft are (whoops mixed measurements).

I was thinking of  just a few feet above your bird feeder where the stems are already producing foliage from what I saw. (see above).  But good luck what ever you do!
