Black currant and gooseberry bushes

Is it too late to prune my fruit bushes ?

  • Hi you don't need to prune gooseberries until next spring.

Depends what shape of plant you want. Gooseberry espaliers (unusual but I have one) or cordons do need summer pruning to restrict their growth but ordinary bushes can get away without.  Winter is the usual time to encourage new growth.  (Same applies for redcurrants, whitecurrants, apples, pears (mostly).)

Blackcurrants - either when harvesting or (more usually these days, I think) winter too.  Just remove the oldest (darkest) 1/3 of shoots as low down as poss.  Feed copiously.

  • Thanks, very helpful
