Talkback: Can I reduce a large pampas grass?

I have a large elderly Pampas Grass in my small chicken run.

Using garden shears I prune this every year from the outside/new growth; this gives an umbrella effect, and provides the birds with excellent daytime shelter during severe weather.

Awkward work but makes for happy birds.

  • Sounds great, everyone is happy. How much do you want to reduce it by?

Pampas grass can be a double edged sword. The only way to reduce the spread, which is the usual issue is to physically dig it out. Tough job but often necessary.

How about a match and some firelighters?

    Roast chicken? image

  • A spade as per the above or burning it both work well.

  • I've tried burning mine , not worked. will try again next year. I can't budge any of it , have hacked it down to about a foot tall , and am seemingly stuck with it ????

It was a rather tongue in cheek suggestion by me - I hate the stuff!
