I have a large elderly Pampas Grass in my small chicken run.
Using garden shears I prune this every year from the outside/new growth; this gives an umbrella effect, and provides the birds with excellent daytime shelter during severe weather.
Awkward work but makes for happy birds.

Sounds great, everyone is happy. How much do you want to reduce it by?
Pampas grass can be a double edged sword. The only way to reduce the spread, which is the usual issue is to physically dig it out. Tough job but often necessary.
Roast chicken?
A spade as per the above or burning it both work well.
I've tried burning mine , not worked. will try again next year. I can't budge any of it , have hacked it down to about a foot tall , and am seemingly stuck with it ????
