Clematis

Hi, has anyone had any success in growing clematis from seed?  I have collected some seeds - they are very not very distinctive, and wondered if I would be able to plant them now to germinate over the winter. Has anyone done this?

I've done lots. Yes, sow now and leave outside in the cold.

Not very distinctive? are you sure they're fertile seeds

Don't forget the cultivars/hybrids won't come true if they do make fertile seed

  • Hi Nutcutlet, I just picked the flower heads after the petals had dropped, dried the heads for a few days and then gathered the seeds although they are soft and green so I wasn't sure if they were suitable to plant ......

They won't have been ripe seeds Rosie. Seeds need to ripen on a plant. After that you can dry them, though sowing them is often the better thing to do.

  • o.k. thanks for the advice nutcutlet, I will collect some more seeds in a few weeks time when they have had a chance to ripen on the plant.  In the meantime I have sown some geum, teasel and hollyhock seeds which have all germinated nicely.

    Exciting isn't it.

  • So agree with you, I have been successively planting lettuce seeds for the past few months, so far so good, although now there is less light and sunshine the seedlings are becoming weaker.  Still worth sowing for the fun of it though.

I picked a fluffy seed head from a clematis when we met up with Dove in September,( Hostafans poly tunnels are an Alladins cave)  they are now about 2 inches tall, i just put the whole seed head on the compost.

  • I've always wondered about trying to grow Clematis from seed. Now I know!  Can't wait to try it when my garden has had it's 'makeover.'image

It seems that here anyway, September is a good time because I sowed some more at the end of October and they haven't come up yet. I have saved some to sow in March.

  • I will give that a try Lyn.  Nothing ventured and all that.  I have still got some fluffy heads on my clematis to pick.
