Mares tail

Despite a weed control membrane cover being put down in my garden , and using Roundup  weedkiller,  which claims it kills mares tail, it's still taking over my garden. If I can't come up with a solution, I might have to consider dynamite.

Can someone please tell me how to eradicate  this evasive weed for once and for all.

    Move house.

  • Once and for all - NO CHANCE!!. it will take time and effort. 1st i would stripe

the membrane cover off,Then DAMAGE the "leaves"otherwise the weedkiller will have no chance as the leaves have a surface that is water proof ,apply weedkiller ALL over that means the edges as well, replace a weed control membrane that will block out light COMPLETLY, around edges put something to keep the light out eg stones, now leave it, just keep fingers crossed.

Saw them do this on tv the other night, cut it down to six inches then inject the weedkiller directly down the stalks, lots of it. Probably need to do it a few times but thst was one of the big gardens, cant remember now which one.

    good luck

    Devon.
  • Hoeing can help if done regularly - it's supposed to weaken the weed and does eventually, together with the membrane you are using. The more heavy duty ones are more effective; the type that landscape gardeners use together with glyphosphate on the bruised stems. Best of luck - it is horrible stuff!

Buddyboy, how effective have you found Kurtail to be?  Has there been much regrowth in an area once fully treated?  It ain't cheap so I'd want to have a decent level of confidence before trying it.

I'll get my order inimage  I've just hand dug an area roughly 25 ft x 15 ft and gone through every fork full by hand to remove as much of the stuff as I can.  Using chemicals in the spring when it starts to regrow will hopefully finish it off.

  • Thank you for all the replies. I've only been in this property for  a year and have no intention of moving.

The Prince's Trust put down the membrane, paved  the area, and built a pond and raised bed for me as I'm disabled, so there's no way I'm going to ask them  to undo  all their very hard work that they did for me,so I'm going to try Kurtail, and hope I have the same results as Buddyboy..

  • Thank you Buddyboy. I'm going to ask my brother to do the spraying for me.
Sorry another question, how long will I have to keep my cats indoors after spraying?

  • Thanks again Buddyboy.
