Hmm yes, they're described as self-fertile, but most people find they get a noticeably bettter crop if there's an appropriate pollinator nearby. A flowering crab apple will usually do the job.

Did we come to a conclusive ID on the 'ice'? Is it a slime mould as nut suggested? It's quite fascinating - never seen that before
