I have a very old Atco. I'm not sure if it's supposed to be silent - but it most certainly isn't!! Very effective on woody and semi ripe stuff but clogs with green. I use a petrol lawn mower for the green stuff and hedge trimmings.

Mixed with shredded paper / wood shavings both make excellent compost quite quickly. Gets very hot in the compost bin if you stack the material and shred it in bulk.

Buy your OH some safety goggles too - mine throws out little bits every so often.

Ihad mine out today and did the buddliea I cut down at the weekend and some verbena which had keeled over in the wind.

Tomorrow I'm starting to lift dahlias so it'll have another outing then.

    Devon.
  • My goodness, you have given me lots of information, I really don't know where to begin - makes and models would be very helpful - although I imagine that some of your models will have been superseded by now.  Seems like it's a fun/relaxing thing to do the shredding although perhaps better to do this when the neighbours are out due to the noise. Thanks you all and keep adding more information if you can, please.
