Hi Yarrow 2  That's such a shame that you lost your plants. Its usually over the winter that people loose them. They will usually only grow from fresh seed so be cautious buying seed from a garden centre where they may have been in the heat of a huge shed for months.

They are not as difficult as some may have you believe. It is all to do with making sure they do not dry out, feed them with some pelleted chicken manure or 'Grow more' and possibly mulch with leaf mould or garden compost to keep the moisture in as they are shallow surface rooted. Make sure you check any purchased compost that it does not have added lime. In the wild they can grow on limestone but that is different to added lime in a bag of compost.

Its not too late to get some seed and try again just now.

My meconopsis seeds are just beginning to germinate in unheated greenhouse. What temperature should I now put them at.

What a lovely thread. Maybe the clue is to put them in a propagator and leave them out all Winter as Dolly did.

I bought one years ago, but I don't know what happened to it. I am up for the challenge and will get some Meconopsis seeds and sow them the way she did.

l still have the same plants, they have survived the bad weather, they are now halfway grown and look healthy they do take a long while to increase (even longer if you have a son of 61 years who does not know a plant from a weed and walked over them he meant well), l am now 82 years old but still try to look after my plants.   just read that they do not like lime mine are growing in limey soil, also the seeds l bought years ago were half price because they were out of date. do not take notice of soil if they enjoy whatever it is they will grow,l have not hoed mine they have golden gravel  around them as l do not want to hoe, this have been on now for 3 years,l throw whatever feed l have over the garden (usually something cheap).when l planted the seed l put it outside somewhere out of the way and they grew, twice l have done this with success.
