What can I plant here.?

I have an awkward gap under a conifer hedge. I'd like to put something evergreen in if possible. It's sheltered from rain and gets full sun until mid afternoon (but quite shaded by the conifers). I have tried a photinia red robin, still in place but not doing too well. I can move a fern but would like winter interest or I have a fatsia but not sure if it will grow there?
Above are some photos of the problem area, does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

I should also say it's the left hand corner, almost under the lighter coloured conifer.
Maybe sarcococcus?
Thanks figrat, I'll look it up.
choisya ternata does well in a bit of shade and overhead protection
In the sticks near Peterborough
I looked at choisyas today, I'm not sure which variety. Would others also be ok do you know, in case I can't find ternata?
Thanks everyone, the new choisya ternata is in situ along with its dark green foliage. (Couldn't find a sarcococcus. )
