Stopping leylandii growing up

It is a silly question, but I need to know the answer 
If I put a PVC sheet over the top of a leylandii hedge, will it stop growing up or just die ?
It a two-storey house high at the moment and it is quite costly to get it trimmed twice a year and I don't really want to remove it as it serves very well as a privacy screen. I can do the sides easily myself, but the top is a bit of a challenge due to height.

Neither; it will just keep growing taking the sheet (how ugly would that be?) with it.
