    Ah.  Yes.   I'd forgotten about soft fruit needing acidic soil.  Maybe I put too much ash on the raspberries last spring, which could account for my poor crop this year.  Although I did add a lot of (acidic) leaf mould at the same time. image

    Wood ash is good stuff. image Something not mentioned so far is that you can sprinkle it around newly planted seedlings, like lettuces, and it stops the slugs eating them.  It really works if you make a ring around each plant

    I also use it on the lawn to green up parts that look yellow as well as sprinkling it around fruit trees and shrubs.  

    Based in Sussex, I garden to encourage as many birds to my garden as possible.
