Successional Planting - Follow On Crops

NewBoy2NewBoy2 Posts: 1,813

I have heard these expressions used by people and on websites

I want to have an allotment which has some veg that grow on after one another and "give some  interest " for as much of the year as possible

I have tried some veg that occupy the soil for 10 or 11 months of the year which to me is OK but a bit boring

I would rather have a plot being changed as much during the year as possible whilst also following a rotatoion

I have divided my allotment into 3 areas of 14 foot x 14 foot and next season growing ROOTS  BRASSICAS  OTHERS as general headings

I would appreciate any experiences you have had with crops that be grown in each area after each other and not occupy the areas for long period of time

I appreciate this is after the best of all worlds but after 4 years I now know what I want from my hard work and soil !

  • I always follow 1st early potatoes with leeks which last until about the end of February the next year.  If you want to try that, sow the leeks in early spring in trays or a nursery bed and transplant when you lift the spuds.

A trowel in the hand is worth a thousand lost under a bush.
