I wander off and look at other things but then I drive along and spot another Betula and they're just gorgeous at all times of the year. They're so light and airy. I have three Rowans in the border already so I want something taller but not overpowering. If you can suggest anything else I'll certainly have a look.
Amelanchier lamarckii is a good shrub/tree. Not naturally shapely like whitebeam, but you can prune it to shape. Has flowers in spring, berries for the birds, and good autumn colour. Not as good as a specimen I'd say.
The only drawback with whitebeam is that it looks a bit manky when the foliage is going over, but it's glorious when unfurling in spring. it doesn't have much in the way of flowers or anything, the foliage is the star. Both have different merits. Have you room for both?
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....
I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...
Well as it just so happens....I do. I think the whitebeam for the border with the rowans and maybe an Amalanchier for the "other big bit I have to fill"! The chap who lived here before me had big ideas and then got ill and was unable to maintain them so I have these wide open spaces where I've cleared all the brambles and undergrowth. At the minute they're here a shrub there a shrub!
I'm used to gardening on a much smaller scale with dwarf things and small stuff so it''s all new looking at trees and space filling!

How about the other Sorbus - whitebeam? Lovely silvery foliage, and usually a nice 'tree' shape

ooooo yes. We had one of those near where I work many years ago and it was beautiful! That is a very strong contender Fg.
What about Amalanchier? Any cons with those? .....but I'm still thinking whitebeam.
