There is no evidence that Glocosamine helps with knee pain, but I know that if I don't take it regularly I am in agony. So Mr Clark unless you have tried acupuncture and find it wanting I would discount your views.
There are more things in Heaven and Earth...............
There are actually a number of trials published in reputable medical journals, that suggest acupuncture does have noticeable analgesic effects. Obviously, it will not cure the underlying condition.
How can you lie there and think of England When you don't even know who's in the team
I think Punkdoc has hit the nail on the head. Acupuncture cannot cure anything but it may in some circumstances relieve symptoms. I tried it, as a last resort and against the advice of my physio, for lower back pain. It had absolutely no effect. When circumstances allowed I underwent a thorough investigation and it was found that I had a stress fracture in one of my lower vertebrae causing pressure on the sciatic nerve. No amount of proddling with needles would have helped this. On the other hand I knew colleagues who tried acupuncture for dead legs and such and they thought it helped.
I have used acupuncture for years with great success.
Out gp offers it as a relief for muscular skeletal pain, dil is a physio at St Georges and uses it regularly
and dog is fully cured of spinal problems by our forward thinking vet, she loved it and would run into the surgery and sit at vets feet waiting to be needled
so, yes, I believe it really works, you need about 3 to get lasting relief
Weeds are flowers, too, once you get to know them.” A A Milne
A friend of mine who was over weight and had a needle inserted in her ear lobe, every time she felt like eating she just touched the needle and didn't want the food. This was back in the early '70's. It did work and she lost the weight she needed too. Whether it was the needle or sheer will power. I lost two stone purely because I wanted too, but with her, I don't know, but whatever it was, it worked.
personally, I have needle phobia, so would be on the floor at the first sight!.

Thank you everyone I am most grateful for ALL your experiences and views on acupuncture. Each of you added an individual point of view .I couldn't have asked for anything more.
Still I need to speak to gp to see where I'm going with this,

I've seen it done on a dog and it worked a treat so I had high hopes but it didn't work for me unfortunately.
There are so many yeses and noes that it sounds to me like you need to try it for yourself and see.
Good luck with it.
