I'd agree with that obelixx - very dull when they've done their thing, and often they don't flower for long if the weather's poor, as they get so easily damaged. They're best suited to a big border where you can have something coming along in late spring/early summer to take over.
You could also go for something like a conical Holly (Ilex) to give form all year round. Variegated foliage and berries too if you have the right one.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

Again all who have helped a big thank you. I went to my gardem centre armed with all recommendations on here and struggled to find any of them after being told that stock is being backed off now for xmas trees etc. However there was a spirea snow mound which i opted to purchase. Although different to what i would have preferred i heeded all advice on here hoping that the spirea will serve well.
