Mystery houseplant

Hi folks,

I've a picture for you, its a little dark but I need identification if possible please. I have a bad track record with house plants but am willing to try not to kill this......this is how I found the plant so not sure if its in the correct conditions. Any suggestions please!

Thanks very much!

Haha Jo! image that's fantastic!I think all my houseplants need a pot like that!

My green fingers only work outdoors! Think maybe I take them off like gloves when I come in! image

Wonky, if I remember correctly, the mystery plant is slightly reddish/purplish - maybe you could take it outside and get a picture in bright daylight tomorrow for us - then I'll go through my houseplant books ...

The new flat has a nice working chimney and fireplace, so delivery shouldn't be a problem image

Interesting Philips, thank you, I will look it up! The last owner was the neglectful type when it came to looking after things, so could well be!

Don't know about the green fingers though, they are new, only started gardening this year so still dabbling and learning by trial and error! image

Yes Dove your right about the colouration, purple under side to the leaves which are quite plump and beefy!

Also correct about Santa access! I've decided to invite him for Christmas dinner to bribe!

Sorry Philippa, spell check renamed you! image my apologies!

  • Hi WonkyWomble, image

First reaction when I saw the picture was that it might be a Rhoeo, also called Moses in a Basket.

Couldn't be certain from the picture though, but after reading the way both Dove and you describe it,  I think I may be right.

If it is a Rhoea, they are very easy to look after, but I would plant it in good potting compost, and don't water too often.

Some more info, and a picture here...

Good luck with it, because it looks like a really nice plant.image

There are some similarities with the Rhoeo, but from what I remember Wonky's plant is a lot bigger than the description ... image
