My pears are not ripe yet and we are due some really bad winds.what to do?

Indeed so. We picked a whole load of still-hard Conference pears about 10 days ago. Some of them are beginning to ripen. If you wait till they're ripe to pick them you'll have to eat them all in about half an hour.
