    I was also going to suggest lavender or hardy geraniums (Nimbus is my fave - a lovely mauvy/blue) perhaps underplanted with alliums.

  • I saw somewhere the other day that underplanting with salvias is an excellent way of promoting good health in your roses.

    Alliums are good at deterring aphids so I have Purple Sensation, some large white ones, and sphaerocephallum amongst my roses.  I also keep peanut feeders nearby and that attracts birds which hoover up any aphids.
